Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are often misunderstood—either seen as overly complex or assumed to be “one-size-fits-all.” In reality, GNSS performance depends heavily on matching the right receiver and antenna to the specific application, environment, and accuracy requirements. This places a clear responsibility on GNSS suppliers to do more than deliver hardware: they must understand the customer’s use case and guide them accordingly.

Without that expertise, a surveying firm might be sold an entry-level receiver that struggles in multipath environments, or an industrial operator might pay for a high-end system that delivers precision they never needed. Aviation

The OPSGROUP 2024 GNSS Spoofing Report shows that civil aviation GNSS receivers can appear nominal after spoofing while remaining contaminated, creating latent safety risk—highlighting the need for receivers with intrinsic spoofing detection, signal-quality monitoring, and controlled recovery, not procedural mitigation alone.

GNSS vulnerability is receiver-architecture dependent, not region dependent; therefore the risks documented by OPSGROUP apply directly to GNSS-reliant aviation environments in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Mining

A 2025 peer-reviewed review in the International Journal of Digital Earth examining positioning technologies for underground mines concludes that mining environments are categorically GNSS-denied and that positioning failures are driven not only by signal loss, but by integrity degradation caused by multipath, non-line-of-sight propagation, and unobservable measurement bias. The review further identifies early detection of corrupted measurements and multi-sensor fusion—particularly GNSS, inertial, and local reference systems—as the primary technical requirement for safe automation and personnel tracking in deep mines.

GNSS vulnerability in mining operations is therefore receiver-architecture dependent, not region dependent. These integrity failure modes apply directly to deep and highly automated mining environments in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, where operations frequently transition between GNSS-reliant surface systems and GNSS-denied underground domains, often without dense augmentation or fallback infrastructure.
